David! Nobody Cares! jordanmarsh6, April 20, 2021April 5, 2023 My wife and I have been watching this show called Schitt’s Creek. It’s kind of one of those shows you just fall into accidentally and keep watching because there is nothing else you know of. At first it is slow, but the characters begin to grow on you. Season 3, Episode 4 of Schitt’s Creek teaches a BEAUTIFUL life lesson. David and Alexis are brother and sister. They’re both twenty-something adults. David’s driver’s license expires and he has to go take a driver’s test to have it renewed. Alexis claims that David failed his previous driving test fifteen times before he finally got his license. David then reveals he has severe test anxiety and proceeds to worry way too much about the test. This next part is the profound scene. Clearly I don’t think Schitt’s Creek intended it to be a profound scene; they just wanted it to be funny. It is definitely funny, but it is also profound. Alexis is shown dropping off David at the place he is going to take his test. David is clearly anxious and says he is for sure going to fail. Alexis then says, “You’re acting all sorts of crazy right now. This honestly does not matter. Nobody cares!” David freaks out saying, “People care! I care! The driver examiner person cares!” Then Alexis hits us with yet another truth bomb: “No he doesn’t. Trust me. People aren’t thinking about you, the way that you’re thinking about you.” They proceed to have an argument about how Alexis thinks David always overthinks things and how David thinks things have always just fallen into Alexis’ lap. They get out of the car and David takes his place in the driver’s seat while the tester is coming. Alexis looks in the window and defiantly says, “David! Nobody cares!” I mean I know it sounds harsh. But sheesh this just r.e.s.o.n.a.t.e.s with me. Nobody really cares. For the most part, people are concerned about their own life. They might concern themselves with your life every now and then, but not nearly as much as you think they do. Let me tell you why this is the topic. Remember the cycle: Inspiration –> Motivation –> Plans –> Action I have had quite a bit to say about everything except the last one so far. As I thought about what keeps us from doing the things we want, I feel like we make up what other people will think of us, and it scares us. Example: I have heard so many people make fun of blogs. There is no doubt that I hear those little boo birds in my head every time I sit down to write. I think to myself, “Oh when this person sees that I am writing a blog, they are going to think I am so dumb for starting another one.” Let’s dissect that thought for a second and dive into the mind of the person I think is going to judge me. They might be scrolling through their feed and see a post of mine. They might click on the website and look at it for five seconds. They then might proceed to judge, it’s true. They’ll think I am dumb, just like I suspected. Or maybe they won’t think that. Who freakin’ knows what they are actually thinking? Then they’ll exit my page, continue scrolling, and start worrying about how I and everyone else are perceiving them. Truly, down deep in that metaphorical person’s soul, they will not care in the slightest that I started a blog. And here is the best part: I won’t know if any of this actually happened. That fifteen second part of their life will likely come and go without me ever knowing it happened. There are things we want to do. A lot of us worry more than we should about what others will think of us when we try to start those things we want to do. I find the advice that Alexis gave David for his driver’s test to be the mantra we need to adopt when we’re worried about what others will think. Truly, truly, truly, nobody cares. People aren’t thinking of you, the way you think they are thinking about you. So just go do what you want and stop worrying about it. Self Improvement
