Let’s Finish the Cycle jordanmarsh6, January 17, 2021April 5, 2023 My wife and I welcomed our first little girl into the world in June 2018. In August 2018, we packed up everything we had and moved cross-country from Salt Lake City, UT to Washington DC. My wife was starting a master’s degree in Occupational Therapy and I was…unemployed. We decided to go for it and do our best to find a job once we got there. Luckily enough, I found a job as a patent examiner at the United States Patent & Trademark Office about a month after we moved out there. This was a relief, but also an opportunity: I didn’t start for another three months. My mind started HUMMING with ideas on how to make some extra money and spend my time before the job started. After a week or so, I finally landed on something: Praem Tutors. My eventual plan was to go to medical school, and I had just finished taking the MCAT that spring. I figured I would start an online tutoring business for the MCAT. I had it all planned out: I would get to work from home, make some good money, polish my skills before I went to med school, and have a fun time doing it. I even had a wicked cool Latin name for my business. Praemiti is Latin for “reward”. Can’t you just picture the slick marketing campaigns? Praem tutors will “reward” you with your dream MCAT score and “reward” you with your dream medical school. I launched a website, I made some flyers, started looking into Instagram and Facebook marketing, and then… I just kind of stopped. I honestly don’t know what exactly happened. I just lost the drive to keep it up. Maybe it was because I hated studying for the MCAT. Maybe it was because I knew I had another job in my back pocket. Or maybe it is because I got scared to put myself out there. Whatever it was, Praem Tutors crashed and burned before it ever even got off the ground. Here’s a super simplified version of this story: Jordan gets inspired, Jordan gets motivated, Jordan sets goals and makes plans, Jordan finds something else new and shiny to play with. Aren’t I such a cool and interesting person? This is a common cycle and I am determined to learn how to break it. I want to dive deep into actually become the person you want to be. As I have considered the basic framework of every accomplishment we may have in life, it breaks down this way: Inspiration –> Motivation –> Plans –> Action We need to understand this cycle deep in our bones to figure out why it breaks down sometimes, and how we can make it break down less so we can become the best version of ourselves. I’m excited to start this journey! I hope you’ll stick around. Self Improvement
